I recently had my home destroyed by smoke due to a garage fire. I called Joe, said just that, and asked if his company would provide a free estimate to have the house brought down to the studs and rebuild. He told me, "yes', then immediately started fishing for how much money I'd have to work with. I advised him that he did not need that information to give me the estimate I needed.
This raised an immediate red flag but I decided to meet him at the house to see if he'd give a competitive estimate.
Once he arrived, he barely had an interest in measurement or viewing but, more boldly, starting asking about money again, which insurance company I had and the adjuster's name so he could speak with him/her. He told me that his estimate would be right in line with the adjuster's. When I reminded him that he was competing with other potential contractors, he informed me that he would be charging me over $200 for the estimate.
This man was argumentative and very abrasive. I called him out for the lie over the phone, told him to stop talking and escorted him to the door.
